Monday Lunch: Previewing the Gold Cup Roster

By Evan Ream

The CONCACAF Gold Cup may not start for another six months, but it is never too early to discuss who will make the team. With a 2013 Confederations’ Cup berth on the line, USA will send their best 23 players to this tournament in hopes of qualifying for the same tournament that made them famous just two summers ago. Right now, USA’s first choice starting lineup seems pretty obvious. It seems like Bob Bradley will go with a 4-2-3-1 that looks like this:

Thursday Lunch: The Calm Before the Storm: Bowl Week 2

By Dylan Davis

The week of bowls leading up to New Years day may not be as important as the games after January 1, but they often include some of the most entertaining and balanced match ups. The first week of bowl told us a few things: It told us that Boise State is one of the best teams in the country and should have gotten a shot at playing the big boys; it told us that Jake Heaps (QB for BYU) is going to be a star for the next three years; it also told us that there’s a reason some of these teams barely qualified for bowls (I’m looking at you, UTEP). But enough about last week, let’s take a look at the upcoming schedule for games from the 23–29.

Predictions:
Last Week’s Record: 3-2
Overall Record: 3-2

Tuesday Lunch: The Comeback of the Decade

By Will Robinson
photos
Week 15 of the NFL season was one of the best of the year. There were plenty of marquee games that lived up to the hype before the week started and the playoff picture is becoming much clearer; Detroit travelled down to Tampa and upset Josh Freeman and his Bucs; Baltimore edged out a win against New Orleans; Indianapolis defeating Jacksonville to stay in the AFC South race; Sexy Rexy leading the Redskins to a close defeat against Dallas; the Jets getting back on track with a clutch win in Pittsburgh; and the Matt Flynn-led Packers giving the Patriots a harder test than they have had recently. However, no game matched the final 8:13 that transpired in the New York Giants vs. the Philadelphia Eagles.

Monday Lunch: For the Sake of American Soccer, Borussia Monchengladbach NEED to be Relegated

By Evan Ream

Note: Check out this post on our NEW site!

I know what you are thinking: I must be crazy to suggest that Borussia Monchengladbach, employer of Michael Bradley, need to be relegated, but hear me out. I have been watching Bradley play for the last four years, and as much as he has improved, it is clear to me that he has hit a plateau. Borussia Monchengladbach, who Bradley plays for in the German Bundesliga, are a terrible team right now, gaining just 10 points in 17 games (7 points away from the safe zone) while having a league worst -21 goal differential. Monchengladbach are easily the worst team in the league.

Russell's Corner: Good vs Evil, A Fan's View of The USA-Mexico Rivalry

By Russell Jordan

Note: Check out this post on our NEW site!

The first time I ever watched the United States Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT) take the field was in 2002. It wasn’t live, the game was on at something like midnight California time; I watched it on this thing they used to call a VHS tape. I played soccer growing up and was pretty excited to see the USMNT play on the biggest soccer stage in the world. I had no idea at the time just how big the World Cup was, and how much impact this game would have on US soccer as a whole. I don’t remember all the specifics of the game, I remember the goals, and not having enough fingers to count how many times Mexican players went studs up, or sometimes just deliberately kicked US players. To this day, I’m surprised Cobi Jones wasn’t seriously injured in that game. The US won 2-0 and advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1930, also farther than Mexico had ever advanced (in a World Cup that didn't take place in Mexico). That game forever changed the face of US soccer, and also the biggest rivalry in North America.

Looking way back to the origins of the rivalry, the first game between the two was won by the US in a World Cup qualifier in 1934. After that however, Mexico dominated the rivalry. From 1937 to late 1980 Mexico didn’t lose a game to the US, with a record of (21-0-3). Domination may be a bit of an understatement actually; the state of US soccer was poor, with the sport being drowned out by more popular American sports like the NFL, NBA, and MLB, soccer was a sub-culture, and something most thought was a game for children.

Saturday Lunch: Davies Set to Return to Sochaux First Team

By Evan Ream

United States Men's National Team forward Charlie Davies is set to make his return from injuries sustained in a fatal car accident nearly 14 months ago in Washington D.C. Davies, who sustained a lacerated bladder, fractured right tibia and femur, a fractured elbow, multiple facial injuries, and bleeding in the brain, will dress for their game against Bordeaux tomorrow at 8am pacific according to the Sochaux website and Davies' personal Twitter account. Davies has 2 goals in 8 career Ligue 1 matches for Sochaux, both coming against Bordeaux. The game will be available on Fox Soccer Channel after Sunday's Manchester United - Chelsea game was postponed due to snow.

Friday Lunch: Why Blake Griffin Does Not Deserve ROY…And More

By Brent MacDonald
The winter season has come at last, and SportsCenter hasn’t been this entertaining all year. NFL playoffs are just around the corner, the BCS college series is about to begin, NBA basketball is in full swing, and college hoops are almost halfway through the season. No longer do golf highlights or repetitive baseball plays take up the spots on the nightly Top 10 plays.

Instead, the high-flying acrobatics and human-like monstrosity of Blake Griffin can be seen after every Clippers game, and most nights throughout the week. Many would say that Griffin is the scariest player in the NBA. Others would say his talents are enough to garner the Rookie of the Year award.

I would have to agree, if in fact Blake was a rookie. But he’s not, and here’s why:

Thursday Earlier Lunch: ‘Tis the Season: First Bowl Week of 2010/11

By Dylan Davis

Another college football regular season has come and gone, and it’s time for the strangest, biggest, craziest postseason out of any sport in America. The college bowl system is debated year after year, but amidst all of that, there are great games and crazy plays throughout. This year promises to be no different as there are many intriguing games and possibly the best batch of BCS matchups ever. Without further ado, here are my predictions for the first week of bowl action along with the swag that each player receives from each bowl game.

Tuesday Lunch: Sizing Up the NFC Favorite

By Will Robinson

With only three weeks to go in the regular season, the playoffs are being clearer and clearer. Or murkier. In fact, a lot can still happen with three games to play. The AFC looks locked up with New England and Patriots all but guaranteeing first round byes. Atlanta is ahead by two games over the next non-division foe, and if they hold off New Orleans (ahead by one), then they will have a first round bye.

Monday Lunch: Is Stuart Holden The Next USMNT Star?

By Evan Ream

Note: Check out this post on our NEW site!

I say star in a relative way because the United States Men’s National Team has never truly had a star field player. Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey right now are close, and Claudio Reyna a few years ago was as well, but USA has never truly had a star field player playing consistently for a top European Club team and delivering good performances week in and week out. Stuart Holden is 25 already, so it is unlikely that he will ever become one of these types of players, but that isn’t what I wish to discuss. Right now on the USMNT, Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey are a level above every other field player; Stu Holden has the chance to rise to their level with his recent success and be a focal point for the national team.

Wednesday Lunch: Good vs. Evil: The 2011 BCS Championship Game

By Dylan Davis

I’m biased. Before I begin with my analysis of this years match up, I want you to know that I’m not totally objective about this year’s game. Now, I can’t say that I’m a die-hard fan of either Auburn or Oregon, and in a vacuum I can’t say I would care either way who won, but that’s the thing about sports, it’s not played in a vacuum. I root for certain teams no matter what (Steelers, Kings, St. Louis Cardinals, West Virginia football) and want other teams (Yankees, Duke basketball, Ravens, Cowboys, Lakers) to get annihilated every time they take their respective field or court. I have lesser feelings about every other team and those are somewhat nebulous. When the Patriots were the plucky upstarts playing the mighty Rams (that looks slightly ridiculous now), I rooted for them to pull the upset and capture their first championship. However, as they kept winning and systematically destroyed the league on their way to four Super Bowl appearances and three titles in seven years, beating the Steelers twice in the AFC title game in that span, my feelings went from being happy for them to absolutely despising their boring efficiency and creative cinematography. Notre Dame has taken the exact opposite trajectory in terms of my sports hatred. I was born and raised to abjectly hate the Fighting Irish with their own network (NBC), smugness, and this guy. Throughout the course of my college football watching life the Irish have descended farther and farther into soul-crushing mediocrity and I’ve found it increasingly difficult to care about, much less hate, a school that goes 7-5 or 6-6 year after year while routinely losing to Navy and Rich Rodriguez-coached Michigan teams. Barely making the Sheraton Hawaii bowl is no way to keep my sports hatred focused on a specific team.

Tuesday Lunch: A Wild Monday Indeed

By Will Robinson

Wow. That is all I can say. Wow

Now, one may be wondering what I am wowing about. I think that if you are not an NFL fan or have lived in a hole for the past 28 or so hours, then you will have no idea.

Two events that occurred yesterday dropped my jaw. Let’s start with the more current thing/the one that doesn’t hurt my soul to speak about.

Monday Lunch: Ranking the Designated Players

By Evan Ream

With MLS Cup 2010 over with, I feel like it is finally time to look back on one of the biggest league changes that has ever occurred in MLS. I’m talking about the “Designated Player Rule.” For the first 11 years of MLS, the maximum salary that any player could be signed to (aside from a few exceptions) was around $300,000. This made sense from a fiscal standpoint as MLS didn’t have enough money to spend any more than that, however it didn’t help bring any more star power to the league.

After a decade of MLS, the owners began to feel like the league was becoming stale and thus created the so-called “Beckham Rule,” under which any player could be signed for any amount of money, though he would count as a maximum salary under the salary cap. This rule was created to sign marquee players that the league never would have been able to sign before. Although a Designated Player has yet to win an MLS Cup, they have undeniable changed the way the league works. From busts like Denílson to great successes like Juan Pablo Ángel, I am going to rank all the designated players from worst to best.

Before I get to the list, I want to describe the criteria that I’m working with. First of all, I’m only going to consider DP’s that originally signed with the league as DP’s (so I’m disregarding Landon Donovan, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, and Luciano Emilio). Furthermore, I’m only going to include players who have spent the majority of their MLS career as a designated player (so Claudio López is excluded). When I cut those players out of the equation, 17 players remain. I am going to judge those 17 players on not only goals and assists, but also contributions to their team weighed against their salary (according to Wikipedia) and any notable contributions to the team (such as winning trophies or setting franchise records). So, without any more build up, here is my list:

Russell's Corner: The 2022 World Cup and More

By Russell Jordan

First of all, I would like to say, that unlike much more professional writers on this blog, I am EXTREMELY bitter about USA not getting the 2022 World Cup. Yesterday I woke up, brushed my teeth and took I shower. When I got out of the shower I noticed I had a text from ESPN. The text read “United States was runner-up for 2022 world cup, lost to Qatar” If my iPhone didn’t cost more than almost everything else I own I would have thrown the thing straight across the room. I honestly can’t remember a time I was so dumbfounded. Qatar? Really? QATAR??? I could understand Australia, a decent location with a soccer history, its not great, but they have one.  BUT QATAR??? Do they even HAVE soccer stadiums? Let alone people to fill them?? Let alone alcohol to sell to these people?? Oh no, that’s right, it’s illegal.

To be honest I couldn’t point out Qatar on a map, although I know its somewhere in the Middle East. Who is going to want to travel to Qatar in possibly 120 degree summer heat? I’m not mad at Qatar, but I will laugh as they crumble under the pressure of the World Cup, I’m still gonna bank on the fact that they wont build anything in time and the Cup will be awarded to the US in about 2 years.

Thursday Late Lunch: A Fan's Essay

By Nick Gallaudet

Ok, I’m about to go to a deep, dark place with this article. I will be reliving some of the most upsetting and traumatic moments of my life in these next few paragraphs; but I feel that this needs to be addressed. If you’re anything like me, perhaps you’ve questioned your love of sports from time to time. It seems like it’s been happening to me more and more, recently, and I’m worried that my love of sports is doing more harm than good. The tipping point was the Cal/Oregon football game a couple weeks ago, but before I get into that, some other things need to be addressed. I feel an obligation to clarify my fandom before going any deeper into this article. I love sports. I have since I can remember. Playing, watching, it doesn’t matter, I can’t get enough. I remember going to A’s games with my dad, watching Braves games on TV, and my earliest memory is getting hit in the face with a waffle ball when I was two. Sports are simply a huge part of my life.

Thursday Lunch: Son of a Preacher Man, Dissecting the Cam Newton Saga

By Dylan Jamaal Davis

Note: Check out this post on our NEW site!

Cam Newton smiles a lot. He has smiled after every one of his 43 touchdowns this season. He has grinned after all 12 of Auburns victories on the year. He flashes the pearly whites whenever he bowls over another defender or hits a receiver with another frozen rope downfield. Newton has broken into smiles so often this season it looks as if he’s auditioning for a Crest commercial. But really, can you blame him? He’s the starting quarterback for the top ranked team in the nation. With one more win this Saturday in the SEC championship game against South Carolina Newton will lead Auburn to its first ever BCS title game appearance. To top it all off, every respectable Heisman watch list starts and ends with the big QB and, barring disaster, Newton and his boyish grin will be raising the stiff-armed trophy on December 11 in New York City. With two more wins, Newton will be forever immortalized at Auburn as one of the greatest players to ever throw on the blue and orange of the Tigers.

Thursday Brunch: The Worst Decision Of All Time

By Evan Ream

Note: Check out this post on our NEW site!

I want to start out by saying that I am not bitter that USA did not get the 2022 FIFA World Cup. For those of you that don’t know, today FIFA Officials voted on this and USA lost in the final round 14-8 to Qatar. Earlier in the day Russia won the bid for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Though it wasn’t the best bid, I’m not bitter about this either. What I am bitter about is that an organization such as FIFA, that prides itself on human rights and fair play, is so obviously corrupt, and there is NOTHING anyone can do about it.

For now, I am just going to focus on the bids for the 2022 World Cup because I am better informed on them. The official final bids for this World Cup were: USA, Qatar, Australia, Japan, and South Korea. Of these bids, USA’s bid included the best infrastructure, stadiums, logistics, and ticket guarantees. USA’s bid was rated the best by FIFA, with Australia coming in second. Unfortunately, Qatar had one thing that USA didn’t have that would prove to be the most vital: the money from oil that made it possible to bribe as many members as possible on the FIFA voting committee, and the moral ambiguity to do it.

Wednesday Lunch: Late Losses and the Plight of the Non-AQ

By Dylan Jamaal Davis

On September 27th, 2008 the 4th ranked team in the country lost at home to an unranked conference opponent by one point on a kicking mistake in the closing minutes. On November 27th, 2010 the 4th ranked team in the country lost on the road to a ranked conference opponent in overtime on two kicking mistakes in the closing minutes.

Both of these teams ended the year with one loss, yet one team was never considered for a BCS game while the other won the national title later that year. If you look at the two games they lost it seems that the second team has the edge because they played a ranked team, the game was on the road, and the finish was closer.

Wednesday Lunch: Youtube Account

By TSL Saff

For those of you looking for Dylan's article, it will be up a bit later tonight, but for now we have an exciting announcement to make. The SACK Lunch has decided to make a Youtube account! Russell Jordan is leading this new experiment. An experienced "Youtuber," Russell has been making popular videos for a few years now, and hopefully will frequently make more. Our inaugural video is embedded after the jump.
